Zakariye

Birmingham based poet, performer, playwright and filmmaker

Zakariye is a poet, performer, playwright and filmmaker from Birmingham. His work often explores masculinity, faith and identity. His short poetry film ‘Cages’ has been broadcast on BBC 4 and BBC iPlayer. Last year saw him reach the finals at the Roundhouse Poetry Slam where he won the audience vote. He is currently a Roundhouse resident artist working on a one-man stage play set to release next year.

He has a forthcoming debut pamphlet due to come out with Bad Betty Press in 2025.

Performances

Zakariye began his creative journey in performance poetry. There was a point in time where you’d rarely find an open mic night without his name scribbled on the sign up sheet.

After cementing himself in the Birmingham poetry scene, Zakariye has gone on to do more than just annoying hosts. He is venturing into theatre with a focus on poetry, visually showcasing poetry through short films, collaborating with more artists and creative mediums and championing new writers by facilitating workshops.
